Female Readymades ‒ Melissa Gordon
-Each painting points to an absent character, a site upon which an action has taken place, becoming a jumping off point for imagination. In Gordon‘s large-format paintings, objects and gestures hang off of fences and barriers, giving a clear sense of the body in relation to architecture and site. Chains, ropes, scarves and other objects are reproduced as one to one copies in silkscreen, hanging in assemblage with painterly gestures, moving our eye between a real and invented experience of image and materials. The paintings are playing with the painterly notion of the given object and imaginative space of painting, speaking of readymade and gesture. The paintings can be read - both literally and figuratively - as meditations on the behaviours of gesture such as gravity, depth, speed and scale.
