Inherited Profiles ‒ Irina Ojovan
-The spectrum of her paintings can be described as an aesthetic field of tension that oscillates between monochrome hard edges and subtly shaded color fields, its formal language never slipping entirely into figuration. The emblematic forms in Irina Ojovan’s paintings create a geometric vocabulary with a style reminiscent of curve rulers, templates, and technical profiles, formulating an architecture of the rudimentary that creates an open structure and always draws the viewer’s focus to the autonomous image as an aesthetic entity.
Form and color create image spaces that are sometimes minimalist, reduced down to the contrast between two colors, and sometimes infinitely nuanced color fields that allow the viewer to peer into the depth of the image, one layer at a time. Technically rigorous and strict in form, Irina Ojovan’s images exhibit a wide range of variations, always seeking the space between the spatial and the formal without any superficial effects.
This artistic principle is echoed in the sculptures in the exhibition, as the aluminum works are closely linked phenomenologically to painting on paper. While the material correspondence of the architectural templates in the images manifests itself in the sculptures, the artist is not so much interested in the translation of content as she is in the flat, almost disembodied state of the sculptures, which she aesthetically equates to the physically fragile, two-dimensional state of paper.
